10 Affordable Budget Kitchen Remodeling Trends

Here are some inexpensive remodeling ideas that can give a kitchen a high-budget look:

• Cabinets are often the most expensive element of a kitchen remodel, but you can save money in many ways. Instead of replacing your cabinets, consider refacing them, a process that just replaces the doors and trim rather than the whole cabinet. Use glass in some cabinet doors, or paint or re-stain your cabinets a different color.

• Changing the countertops can do wonders to refresh the look of a kitchen. If you’re in love with the look of solid granite but blanch at the price tag, consider tiles of granite or another stone to simulate the look at a lower price.

• Laminate countertops can now mimic more expensive materials, include a wide range of colors and textures, and have a variety of edge shapes.

Starting at about per square foot, laminate is still the most budget-friendly option.

• Budget dishwashers and refrigerators don’t have to look inexpensive. You can replace the fronts of some appliances with stainless steel to give a more modern appearance. Some appliances also have removable panels that allow you to match them to the rest of the kitchen.

• Recycling is more than just eco-friendly; it’s a big money saver. You can pull furniture from other rooms to serve as a cabinet or an island.

Discarded old doors can enclose a pantry or serve as a desk.

• The burnished metal look so popular today can be found by re-using antique fixtures, and old farmhouse sinks can give your kitchen a unique look.

• A new coat of paint can completely change the look of a room at a small cost. Sometimes just updating trim color makes a kitchen look refreshed.

• Back splashes in striking patterns or colors can also be added easily and inexpensively. Choose inexpensive tile and hire a professional. All tile looks best when evenly and neatly installed.

• Pick up wine racks for a few dollars at thrift stores. When stained to match cabinets, you can achieve the built-in look for a fraction of the cost.

• Swap or add lighting. Replace dated light fixtures with bright modern ones to easily update a look. Shop big-box clearance racks for pieces that are floor models or last-season to save on the purchase price.

Installing sleek new appliances is another easy way to make your kitchen look more modern and up-to-date. Open up your kitchen by removing soffits and upper cabinets. This will allow the kitchen to flow into the dining room. Tie the dining room and kitchen together by tiling the backsplash and one wall in the dining room with high-style stone subway tile. Adding shelves in the dining room that match the kitchen countertops will also help to coordinate the spaces. These shelves can be used to store things or used as extra storage space. Trendy Color Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen DesignThe color of kitchen cabinets can set the style and tone for your kitchen. Choosing the right finish for cabinets can make or break kitchen décor, so let’s take a look at the latest trends in tone and color for kitchen cabinets.

Modern Kitchen Style

Light color kitchen cabinets with wood tones of ash and birch can really give a modern look to kitchens. It tends to give a streamlined, efficient feel to the kitchen that wants to be the front and center of 21st Century style. Pairing the light color of the cabinets with stainless steel or polished nickel finishes is one of the most popular ways to get the modern kitchen look.

Traditional Kitchen Style

For a more traditional look, deep color kitchen cabinets are the way to go. A deep mahogany or cherry kitchen cabinet finish gives kitchens an elegant look. Deeply stained oak cabinets are always a popular choice as well, and these choices make the cabinets blend more seamlessly to furniture in nearby dining rooms.

Country Kitchen Style

For a down-home, country look and feel to a kitchen, knotty pine and warm, golden color kitchen cabinets are the best choice. These finishes tend to make gathering in the kitchen more comfortable and are a favorite for eat-in kitchens and country style.

Elegant Kitchen Style

Exotic woods are becoming a popular trend in kitchen cabinets. Quarter-sawn oak, knotty chestnut and burl-wood finishes are becoming the high end choice for homeowners looking to add a one-of-a-kind look to their kitchens.

Old-World Kitchen Style

For homeowners looking to give a nod back to the early Europeans, the old world style demands deep, richly colored kitchen cabinets. In addition, cabinetry tends to take on a furniture look and surrounded by natural surfaces such as brick and stone, you can take a grand tour of old Europe with this kitchen décor.

Rustic Kitchen Styles

Rustic kitchens can run the gamut from lodge style to Adirondack style and the color kitchen cabinets look best with is warm, rich, earth tones such as hickory and knotty pine. This Americana style can handle a strong grain in wood kitchen cabinets, so dare to go bold and big in this kitchen décor.

When you choose wood kitchen cabinets, you will need to decide between leaving your wood in its natural state with a clear stain; staining the cabinet by adding rich tones, but still allowing the grain of the wood to show through; or applying a heavier stain that can change the look of the wood. The choice is yours and depends on the look and feel you want for your kitchen.

Choosing a Kitchen Design – General Considerations

Kitchen Design
When it comes to a huge renovation such as a kitchen remodel, there are a few things you need to consider before choosing your kitchen design. One of the most important things is obviously the price. Make sure that you set a budget and stay within that budget. Before you hire anyone to do your work, make sure that you do your research on prospective contractors. Check references and make sure that the contractor is licensed and insured before you sign any contract.

When you are getting ideas for your new kitchen design, think about what types of materials you want. Do you want your counter tops to be granite or quartz? Do you want the kitchen to be dark colored or light colored? What sort of finish would you like for accessories such as faucets? There are so many different products that comprise a kitchen renovation, and it may all seem overwhelming. Get the advice of an expert when in doubt.

One great feature of a kitchen design, if you have the room for it, is an island. There are many different sizes available, and picking the one that you want can take a great deal of thought and planning. You can have the island custom designed; if you want, you can add a built in wine cooler. The best kitchen design for you will be based on its functionality and how well it meets your needs. If your kitchen is very small, you will want to make the most out of your available space.

Last but not least, a big decision in your kitchen design will be the type of cabinets you are going to install. Do you want cherry wood or perhaps a nice light oak? Different woods can vary widely in price, so make sure that you are going to be staying within your budget before selecting your cabinetry.

Kitchen Remodeling – Ways to Save Money

Kitchen Remodeling
Does the thought of remodeling your kitchen leave you breathless? The costs can be prohibitive if you plan to gut your kitchen and start from scratch. Kitchen remodeling, however, can be affordable if you are thinking in terms of basic improvements. It may take time to achieve the look you want, but by taking simple steps, you can remodel on a budget.

New kitchen cabinets are expensive and will take most, if not all, of your budget when redoing a kitchen. There are, however, less expensive alternatives. You can paint over your existing cabinets. The cabinets can also be sanded down and stained; using the right stain can take your cabinets from ho-hum to stunning. Check out cabinet refinishing companies; they will replace the doors on your existing cabinets which is cheaper than buying new cabinets and will make your cabinets look like new. An even cheaper option is to change the hardware on your existing cabinets. Experimenting with the hardware will allow you to introduce color into your kitchen. Colored knobs will draw a visitor’s eyes to the knobs instead of the cabinets.

Here are several other affordable kitchen remodeling projects:

1. Shop for new counter tops. Go to any home store and look for counters that are in stock. Counter tops come in standard sizes, which means you can purchase them for less than having a custom counter top cut for you.

2. Consider installation of do-it-yourself type flooring. Options range from carpet squares to laminate flooring that resembles natural wood or slate.

3. Search home improvement stores for lighting stock that is being phased out as this will be reasonably priced. Alternatively, you can scour yard sales for lighting that you can refurbish and bring back to life.

4. Give your kitchen a new look with a new paint job. Paint the ceiling to bring it up to date. Choose a color that will make your cabinets stand out. Look for sales on paint to save more money.

Any or all of these changes will give your kitchen a new look, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you succeeded in remodeling your kitchen at a reasonable cost.

Kitchen Islands – Types, Cost and Benefits

Kitchen Island

Kitchen islands are a popular fixture in many homes. There are many different styles and designs a home owner can opt to go with, and this will mainly depend on your needs and personal preferences. Choices include cart, counter top and permanent fixture styles. The price will depend on the style you choose as well as the benefits. If you have been considering adding a kitchen island, now is the time to do it. You can redo the look of your kitchen and possibly even increase the value of your home.

The cart style of kitchen islands is often the least expensive. These carts are very simple, yet also very functional. Many come with two or three shelves beneath a cutting board top. This top may be made of stainless steel, wood or plastic. As these islands are completely mobile, you can place them anywhere in the room. Many choose to use the top surface to hold microwaves or other small appliances while some homeowners choose to use the top as an additional workstation.

Counter top kitchen islands are more expensive than cart style ones, but offer many of the same benefits. This style can be either mobile or stationary, and you do have more choices in terms of the island top. The counter top may be made of butcher block, ceramic tile, stainless steel or granite. If you are in need of extra storage space, look for one that comes with inside storage covered by swinging or sliding doors.

A customized kitchen island is the choice of many although it is the most expensive type. This permanent fixture can be used as a breakfast bar. Some people opt to go with built in cooking facilities or additional sinks. Shapes for this style of island include square, round, oval, rectangular or L-shaped. You can find a design that will work best in your kitchen. Be sure to look for features such as built-in wine or pot racks if that will help to organize the room.

With any of these kitchen islands, you need to take the dimensions into consideration. A minimum of 42″ clearance on all sides is needed to allow cabinet doors to open properly. Also, if you plan on using the island as a breakfast bar, 24″ of width will be needed for each bar stool. Kitchen islands are a great addition to any home; just be sure to choose the one that is right for you.
